Unsealed Letters

On July 15, 2020, journalist and founder of The Unsealed Lauren Brill reached out to me to have a conversation about what it was like to teach during a pandemic lockdown. We had a long talk about the trials and tribulations of virtual education, not seeing my students, and what I was doing amidst the swell of racial justice reform. The letter, entitled I Don’t Know How You Feel But This Is How I Hope To Help, was the product of our interview.

The Unsealed’s mission statement:

The Unsealed is a movement that encourages people to see the world through diverse perspectives, creating more compassion and unity among us. Our platform tells stories through open letters that shed light on social inequality and personal experiences. We need our support. Only together can we change the world by unsealing humanity.

One of the organizations I have been keeping an eye in is the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center in Spring Valley, NY. Their mission is:

to provide supplemental educational, health, cultural, social and recreational programs that empower children, adults and elders to achieve personal success, even as they contribute to the building of a stronger, sustainable society.  The Center also strives to preserve the ideals of non-violence, peace, human rights, social justice, and equality, thereby keeping alive Dr. King’s dream of building the “Beloved Community.”

Throughout the pandemic, the MLK Center has been holding regular food distributions to support the families in Spring Valley. I have donated a few times and Lauren made a contribution as my charity of choice.
