I’ve always liked writing. Well, not always. My relationship to the written word has been more of a slow unfolding over the course of my lifetime.
I kept a childhood diary (under tiny lock and key) which held a few random musings about love and heartbreak. In college, letter writing and mix tapes (the precursor to texting and Facetime) bridged long-distance romance. Letter writing was an important connection between my dad and I. It provided a way for us to communicate when we struggled to talk to each other.
As a new mom, I did a little bit of blogging. It wasn’t a regular practice as my time was really limited. Whenever I was inspired, I sat down, opened a document, and started to click away. At some point, when being a working parent became too all-consuming, that blog started collecting dust.
In grad school, I did more academic writing. It taught me the power of words, and the importance of choosing the right ones to get your point across. I learned how to edit on the fly. Writing wasn’t a focus of my undergraduate education, since my time was filled with rehearsals and performance. But the more papers I wrote, the more I realized I was actually a good writer.
I hit more of a stride when I started to write for the purpose of publishing. I had a great developmental editor who taught me a thing or two about the process. Now, I’ve come to rely on editing to sculpt all of the unformed ideas that hit the page.
Now, I love sitting down and writing. It helps me to express the thoughts that I have trouble saying out loud. When I speak, I don’t have the time to think deeply. I feel more compelled to just blather out something so there’s no silence in the air. When I write, I can brain dump, then go back and hone the raw materials into gemstones. I can stop and reflect, research and formulate clearer thoughts. My computer keyboard has become the best confidante in my adult life.
I offer this blog as a forum to teach, inspire, share, and vent. I love the idea that tomorrow, I could have some completely new or random thought to parse out. What’s next? Time will tell.
There are several topics that I focus on:
- Geriatric Gymnastics is about my adult gymnastics escapades.
- Mid-Life Musings/Perimenopause. I’m in perimenopause. I like to write about it to make it all make sense.
- Changed for the Better is a podcast I started in February 2022 about my performing arts alumni.
- My Weight Loss Journey is pretty self-explanatory.
- Family the people I love most.
- Writing tracks my journey as an author and blogger.
- Teaching is for the inspirations I find in the classroom.
- Self-care are a few musings about steps I try to take to look after #1.
- Other Blog Thoughts for musings that need a place to go.
Hopefully, there’s something here that might tickle your fancy. If so, write a comment , subscribe to my site, and check out one of the podcasts.
